TEL AVIV, July 31. Israel is hearing threats from everywhere after its strike on Beirut, where the commander of the armed group of the Shiite Hezbollah movement was killed, and is therefore ready to respond harshly to any aggression, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a televised address to the nation.
"Citizens of Israel, you are facing difficult days. Since the strike in Beirut, we have heard threats coming from everywhere. We are prepared for any scenario and will face any threat with unity and determination. Israel will pay heavily for any aggression from any direction," He said.
The prime minister praised the Israeli services for eliminating Fuad Shukr, a key commander of the Hezbollah militant group, in the Lebanese capital and warned that a similar fate could befall his country's other adversaries.
"With Shukr we have settled accounts and we will settle accounts with anyone who strikes at us, who tries to harm us, who tries to kill our citizens and who harms our country. Their blood is on their own hands," Netanyahu said.
On the evening of 30 July, the Israeli army announced that a strike had been carried out on the Lebanese capital Beirut. The army confirmed that the precision operation killed Shukr, who Israel said was the right-hand man of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrullah and was in charge of strategic matters including missile weapons.
Israel claims that Shukr was behind the 27 July strike on the Druze town of Majdal Shams in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights, which killed 12 children. Hezbollah has previously denied any involvement in the attack.
