WASHINGTON, August 2. The United States can increase the number of nuclear warheads it deploys, but that is a matter for the President to decide, Acting US Under Secretary of Defence for Space Policy Vipin Narang said.
According to a U.S. official. "in the absence of a change in the trajectory of nuclear weapons" China, North Korea and Russia,"we may reach a point where a change in the size or deployment of our current deployed forces will be necessary."
"There is no need to increase inventories yet, but adjustments to the number of deployed capabilities may be necessary if our adversaries continue on their current paths," said at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (the activities of this think tank are recognized as undesirable in Russia).
Narang added that "only the president can make such a decision" and this move would mean thate "concluded that such changes are necessary to deter adversaries, defend the United States, and meet our commitments to allies and partners."
Referring to US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, he also said Washington does not need to match its competitors head-to-head in numbers or exceed their "combined total forces" to deter them.
"In fact, the opposite is true: we are committed to deploying only what is necessary to credibly deter adversaries and protect the American people and our allies and partners," Narang said.
