MEXICO CITY, March 3. /TASS/. Mexico has not applied for membership in BRICS but is closely following its development, the country's Foreign Ministry said.
"Mexico has not applied for admission to BRICS. Mexico is closely following the evolution of the association, given the economic weight of the member countries and the bilateral relations that our country maintains with its members," the ministry wrote on its X account, commenting on media reports that the country wants to join BRICS this year.
"We would like to note that such statements are unfounded," the ministry added.
The BRIC group was founded in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India and China. In 2011, South Africa joined the group, adding the letter "S" to the acronym. In August 2023, six new members were invited to join, including Argentina. However, Argentina declined to join BRICS in late December, while five other countries, namely Egypt, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia, became full members of BRICS as of 1 January 2024.
