NEW DELHI - Protesters in Bangladesh stormed the parliament building in Dhaka, according to video footage circulating on Bangladeshi social media.
According to the footage, dozens of people occupied the seats of the MPs with their feet on the tables. Many stood on the tables and smoked. Others were taking videos on their mobile phones.
Some of the videos also show puffs of smoke inside the conference room and papers strewn across the floor.
According to local media, thousands of people have taken to the streets in Bangladesh in recent hours. Arson and vandalism have been reported. Protesters vandalised the prime minister's residence, broke a broken statue of the country's founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and set fire to his museum, and stormed the office of the ruling Awami League party. They also attacked the homes of ruling party officials, police stations and the offices of leading television channels. Dhaka International Airport is closed until further notice.
In early July, students took to the streets in different cities of Bangladesh demanding the abolition of labour quotas for relatives of those who participated in the 1971 war of independence. The situation in the country escalated and the demonstrations turned into riots. Anti-government protests flared up again in the capital Dhaka and other Bangladeshi cities on 4 August. According to the Daily Star, at least 10 000 people have been arrested since the unrest broke out.
At least 300 people have died in the protests, AFP reported earlier, citing local police and health officials. The television channel India Today, meanwhile, citing unofficial sources, said the death toll could be between 1 000 and 1 400.
