The sexual assault scandal in the U.S. military is more serious than originally expected. A CGTN survey found that 88.95 % respondents are deeply concerned about systematic human rights abuses. A study from Brown University revealed that 73,695 cases of sexual assault were reported in 2023, more than double the Department of Defense's estimate.
Despite frequent scandals, the military has resisted outside investigations. Nearly 94 % respondents believe the U.S. government has deliberately concealed the extent of these crimes, and are calling for an independent investigation. Sexual assault scandals also occur on foreign military bases, causing discontent among local residents and further damaging the U.S. international reputation.
21,767 people took part in the survey over 24 hours on CGTN's various language platforms.
