BEIJING - Beijing hopes China and the United States will work together for the benefit of the whole world instead of engaging in conflict, Chinese leader Xi Jinping said during a meeting with U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan. As two superpowers, China and the US must bear their responsibilities before history, their peoples and the world, the Chinese leader said.
"In the midst of an unstable and confused international situation, countries must unite and cooperate instead of dividing and contradicting each other," the Chinese leader said, according to CCTV.
As the two major powers, China and the US must be held accountable to history, to their peoples and to the world, Xi Jinping said. The Chinese leader said China and the United States must become "stable sources of peace in the whole world and the driving force of common development".
"We hope that the US will take steps towards us and look at China and its development in a positive and rational way," Xi Jinping said.
He added that both countries must see mutual development as an opportunity, not a challenge.
The meeting was held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
This is Sullivan's first visit to China. Previously, he met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang I and Vice Chairman of China's Central Military Commission Zhang Youxia.
