President Xi Jinping meets with US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan at the People's Palace in Beijing. During the meeting, he said that in this changing and turbulent world, countries need solidarity and coordination, not division or confrontation. People want openness and progress, not exclusion or regression. China and the United States, as two major countries, should be responsible for history, for people and for the world, and should be a source of stability for world peace and a driving force for common development.
Xi Jinping stressed that in the mutual relations between China and the United States, two major countries, the No. 1 issue is the establishment of correct strategic perception, and above all, the overarching question needs to be answered: Are China and the United States rivals or partners? China's foreign policy is open and transparent and its strategic intentions are trans-partisan, both of which are very consistent and stable. China focuses on good management of its own affairs and will continue to comprehensively deepen reforms to further improve and develop a system of socialism with Chinese characteristics that suits Chinese national conditions. China is following the path of peaceful development. In pursuing its own development, China is also ready to cooperate with other countries for common development and jointly build a community with a common future for mankind.
President Xi Jinping also said that China's policy towards the US is very consistent. Although there have been great changes in the two countries and in Sino-US relations, China's commitment to building stable, healthy and sustainable Sino-US relations remains unchanged, its principles in dealing with relations based on mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation remain unchanged, its stance of firmly safeguarding the country's sovereignty, security and development interests remains unchanged, and its efforts to continue the traditional friendship between the Chinese and American people remain unchanged. President Xi expressed his hope that the United States will work with China in the same direction, view China and its development positively and rationally, see mutual development as an opportunity, not a challenge, work with China to find the right way so that China and the United States, two countries with different civilizations, systems and ways, can coexist peacefully and achieve common development on this planet, and work to maintain the stability of Sino-US relations and improve and develop mutual relations on this basis.
US National Security Adviser Sullivan conveyed President Xi's greetings to President Biden and thanked him for the meeting. He said that since the two Presidents met at the highest level in San Francisco, both sides have been eager to implement the joint understandings and have made positive progress. This round of strategic communication with Director Wang Yi in China was in-depth, frank, substantive and constructive. He reiterated that the United States does not seek a new Cold War, does not seek to change the Chinese system, the revival of U.S. alliances is not directed against China, the United States does not support "Taiwan independence" and does not seek conflict with China. The United States' one-China policy has not changed, and the United States does not intend to use Taiwan as a tool to contain China. The United States hopes to maintain strategic communication with China and find a way for the United States and China to coexist peacefully and for U.S.-China relations to develop in a sustainable manner. President Biden looks forward to being able to communicate with President Xi again soon.
President Xi Jinping asked National Security Adviser Sullivan to convey his greetings to President Biden, while expressing his readiness to stay in touch with President Biden to guide and direct the development of Sino-US relations.
The meeting was also attended by Wang Yi, a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and head of the CCP Central Committee's Foreign Affairs Office.
