PRAGUE - Primary and secondary schools are starting the new school year today. The Education Ministry said the number of pupils entering the first grade is approximately just under 118,000. Secondary schools will generally have more pupils, while primary schools will have fewer pupils than last year. More specifically, 998,000 pupils will be educated in primary schools, and this will be 2,300 fewer than last year. According to the Ministry's estimates, in the new school year some 475 900 pupils are expected to study full-time in secondary education, secondary education with a teaching certificate and secondary education with a matriculation certificate in secondary schools. Czech President Petr Pavel today visited and opened the school year at the Kladno Primary School and Kindergarten in Zdeněk Petřík Street. Prime Minister Petr Fiala (ODS), together with Education Minister Mikuláš Bek (STAN) and Environment Minister Petr Hladík (KDU-ČSL), will attend the opening ceremony of a science high school in Brno.
