WASHINGTON, September 6. Achieving a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip depends on both the Palestinian radical movement Hamas and the Israeli government, and the United States hopes to get their response in the coming days, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said.
"It seems to me, therefore, that it is really incumbent on both sides to come to an agreement on these remaining issues. And we are in very active talks - particularly with our partners in this effort, Egypt and Qatar," told reporters during a visit to Haiti. "And I expect that in the coming days we will share with Israel and they will share with Hamas our thoughts, the three of us, on exactly how to resolve the remaining outstanding issues."
Earlier, the top US diplomat said that the possibility of a ceasefire agreement depended primarily on Hamas and its political bureau chief, Yahya Saria.
On 15 and 16 August, a new round of consultations was held in Doha with the aim of reaching an agreement on the release of hostages held in the Gaza Strip and the implementation of a ceasefire there. In a joint statement following the talks, the leaders of Egypt, Qatar and the United States said that the negotiations had taken place in a positive atmosphere.
The next round of talks took place on 25 August in the Egyptian capital, where an Israeli delegation led by Mossad Director David Barnea arrived. Hamas spokesman Izzat al-Risheq said the delegation left Cairo after meeting with mediators from Egypt and Qatar. He said Hamas insisted that Israel meet the conditions agreed by the movement on 2 July. On 28 August, the mediation working groups met again in Doha.
On 2 September, Axios reported, citing the US administration, that US President Joe Biden intends to present a final version of the ceasefire agreement in the coming days. Israel and Hamas are expected to have a week to respond to the new US proposal.
