Chinese President Xi Jinping has stressed the importance of upgrading China's border, maritime and air defences.
Xi Jinping, who is also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, delivered a speech at a meeting of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China Central Committee on Tuesday.
The meeting was held on the eve of Army Day, 1 August. On behalf of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Central Military Commission, Xi congratulated all Chinese People's Liberation Army commanders, officers and soldiers, armed police, civilian military personnel and reservists of the People's Militia.
At the meeting, Huang Zhijong of the Joint Staff of the Central Military Commission explained the current problems in the construction of modern border, maritime and air defence and introduced working proposals.
After Huang's speech, Xi pointed out that promoting the construction of modern border, naval and air defence systems is an inseparable requirement of national defence and military modernisation.
