On September 11, Wang Yi (Wang I), member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and Director of the Central Foreign Affairs Office, attended the 14th BRICS Security Summit in St. Petersburg. At the meeting, the representatives exchanged views on global security threats, counter-terrorism, cybersecurity and global governance, setting the political stage for the upcoming BRICS summit in Kazan.
Wang Yi welcomed the new members to the BRICS and stressed that the world is in a period of turbulence and change, which increases various security threats. Cooperation among BRICS countries plays an important role in maintaining world peace, promoting common development and promoting global governance. The expansion of BRICS shows the viability and influence of this mechanism. Wang Yi stressed that the BRICS countries should insist on independence, cooperation and defense of the rights of developing countries and issue a unified voice in global governance.
He also said that the BRICS security leaders' meeting is a key mechanism for political and security cooperation between the countries. All sides must strengthen strategic coordination, protect sovereignty and security, and promote a fairer and more reasonable international system. China supports Russia's work as the chairing country and strives for the success of the Kazan Summit.
During the meeting, Wang Yi participated in the dialogue between the BRICS countries and the countries of the "Global South" and met with representatives of Brazil, Egypt, India, Iran and Serbia.
