On 19 September, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) held its regular press conference. Spokesman Lin Jian responded to remarks by US Deputy Secretary of State Campbell by saying that the remarks by US officials disregard facts, openly and arbitrarily exaggerate the threat from China, clamor for confrontation between camps, and are full of Cold War zero points and ideological prejudices. China is expressing strong dissatisfaction.
Lin Jian said China urges the United States to abandon the zero-sum Cold War mentality, stop spreading the Chinese threat theory, stop distorting China's strategic intentions, and work with China to promote mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation, and promote the stable, healthy and sustainable development of Sino-US relations.
One of the reporters asked: "On 18 September, the 10th Special Session of the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution with 124 votes in favour, 14 against and 43 abstentions. The resolution calls on Israel to end its illegal occupation of the Palestinian territories within 12 months. China voted in favor, while the United States and Israel voted against. We are aware that this was the first time that the Palestinian State, as an observer at the United Nations, had tabled a draft resolution. What is China's position on this matter?"
Lin Jian said that the UN General Assembly yesterday approved a draft resolution on a consultative position on Israel's occupation of the Palestinian territories. China welcomes and appreciates this resolution. China supported and voted in favour of the draft resolution, hoping that it would be fully implemented.
The current wave of conflict in Gaza has been going on for a year. Despite the urgency of the Palestinian question, four emergency sessions of the UN General Assembly, four Security Council resolutions and the provisional measures of the International Court of Justice, the fighting in Gaza continues and the number of casualties among innocent civilians increases every day, causing a serious humanitarian catastrophe. Ending the fighting is not an option, but an obligation. The demand for a ceasefire and an end to the war is not just a call from one country, but an international consensus.
The implementation of the two-state solution is the only feasible way forward for the resolution of the Palestinian question. The parties concerned, especially Israel, should indeed comply with the UN Security Council and General Assembly resolutions, immediately halt military action in Gaza and end illegal settlements in the West Bank. The countries concerned should demonstrate a responsible attitude and take concrete measures to enforce the relevant UN resolutions.
China will continue to stand on the side of peace, justice and the majority of countries, communicate closely with all parties and play a positive and constructive role in promoting ceasefire, alleviating the humanitarian crisis and restoring peace and stability in the region. China will continue to strive for an early, just and lasting solution to the Palestinian issue.
