Pentagon Press Secretary Major General Pat Ryder provided the following information from a meeting between Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III and Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant:
Austin III spoke with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on Sept. 30 to review developments in the security situation and Israeli operations. Secretary Austin affirmed U.S. support for Israel's right to defend itself against Iran, Lebanese Hezbollah, Hamas, the Houthis, and other Iranian-backed terrorist organizations.
They agreed on the need to dismantle the offensive infrastructure along the border to prevent Lebanese Hezbollah from carrying out 7 October-style attacks on northern Israeli communities. The Minister reaffirmed the need for a diplomatic solution to ensure that civilians can safely return to their homes on both sides of the border. He discussed with Minister Gallant the importance of eventually moving from military operations to a diplomatic path that would ensure security and stability as soon as possible.
The Secretary made clear that the United States is well prepared to defend American personnel, partners, and allies in the face of threats from Iran and Iranian-backed terrorist organizations and is committed to preventing any actor from exploiting tensions or expanding the conflict.
Secretary Austin III and Secretary Gallant discussed the serious consequences for Iran should Iran decide to launch a direct military attack against Israel.
