PARIS, Oct 19 - Paris is in talks with NATO allies about the possibility of inviting Ukraine immediately into the bloc, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said on a two-day visit to Kiev.
"As for inviting Ukraine to join the North Atlantic Alliance, we do not rule it out and we are holding discussions with our partners on this issue," Barrot said. He was in Kiev for talks with his Ukrainian counterpart Andriy Sybiha.
A day earlier, in an interview with the newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche, Benjamin Haddad, the minister-delegate for European affairs at the French Foreign Ministry, said Paris believed it was a priority to agree on an official invitation to Ukraine to join NATO. He admitted that the process of joining the alliance may take quite a long time. But Haddad said the invitation is the first political signal that can be made now.
The immediate invitation of Ukraine to join NATO is the first point of the so-called victory plan presented this week by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
