PRAGUE - People in the Czech Republic are today commemorating the 106th anniversary of the founding of the independent Czechoslovak Republic. Commemorative events and ceremonies will be held in Prague and regional cities. Czech President Petr Pavel will appoint new generals and present state decorations at Prague Castle in the evening. Hundreds of people have been nominated for the award by the Senate and the House of Commons, and Pavel will honour a total of 56 people, according to the presidential office.
In the morning, state representatives will attend the traditional commemoration of the Day of the Establishment of the Independent Czechoslovak State at the National Memorial at Vítkov in Prague. Some of them will then lay wreaths at the monument to the first Czechoslovak President Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk on Prague's Hradčany Square.
At noon Paul appoints new generals at the Castle. According to the government's proposal, they could become the director of the Military Intelligence Petr Bartovský or the chief of the Military Police Jiří Roček. The state honours will be presented in the evening in the Vladislav Hall, as is traditional, but the Castle does not disclose the names of the recipients in advance.
