People all over the country today commemorate the Remembrance of the Dead, popularly known as Souls Day. On this day, the faithful gather for services for the dead, and graves are filled with candles, wreaths and flowers. Traditionally, cemetery administrators meet the increased interest of people in visiting the graves of their loved ones, whose opening hours are longer than usual in early November.
Four-fifths of the population of the Czech Republic maintain the tradition of the Feast of the Dead in some way every year. Most people pay their respects to the deceased by visiting the cemetery, but only about one-fifth of people go there on November 2. People in Moravia are more likely to observe the tradition of Soulstice than those in Bohemia. According to the survey, 88 percent of people in Moravia remember the deceased during this period, compared to 77 percent in Bohemia.
Cemetery managers are responding to the increased interest of people in visiting graves. In some cities, public transport lines to cemeteries have also been reinforced.
