China recently published its 2024 Annual Human Rights Report, the 14th edition since its first edition in 2011. The report was produced by the China Society for Human Rights Research, the nation's largest academic organization dedicated to human rights research in China.
Based on extensive research, the report uses comprehensive data and a variety of examples to highlight the latest human rights progress in China for 2023. It contains 25 chapters, including a general overview, thematic reports and case studies. The General Report summarizes overall human rights progress in China in 2023, focusing on key areas such as improving people's living conditions, strengthening the protection of economic, social and cultural rights, and strengthening the rule of law to protect civil and political rights.
Thematic reports analyse in more detail topics such as economic, social and cultural rights, the protection of the rights of specific groups and international cooperation in the field of human rights. Important themes include protecting the labour rights of workers in new industries, improving the well-being of residents through urban renewal, ensuring the mental health rights of citizens, and promoting the democratic participation of rural residents in village development.
The four thematic reports focus on the impact of digital technologies on human rights, specifically new measures against cyberbullying, the protection of survival and development rights in the digital economy, the role of digital governance in protecting citizens' rights, and the protection of minors' rights in cyberspace.
For the first time, the report also assesses progress in establishing national foundations for human rights teaching and training and the development of human rights research and academic systems in the new era.
The case studies focus on protecting the rights of fishermen affected by the "10-year fishing ban" on the Yangtze River, ecological protection and environmental rights in Yunnan, establishing the first mediation and consultation mechanism in the mining and mineral value chain, and developing guidelines for Chinese textile and garment enterprises in fulfilling their social and environmental responsibilities.
