WASHINGTON - (AP) President-elect Donald Trump is set to create a National Energy Council that he says will ensure U.S. "energy dominance" in the world as he seeks to boost U.S. oil and gas production and move away from President Joe Biden's focus on climate change.
The energy council - which will be led by North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, Trump's pick to head the Interior Department - will be key to Trump's promise to "drill, drill, drill" and sell more oil and other energy resources to allies in Europe and around the world.
The new board will gain sweeping powers over federal agencies that deal with energy permitting, production, generation, distribution, regulation and transportation, and will have a mandate to reduce bureaucratic red tape, boost private sector investment and focus on innovation instead of "totally unnecessary regulations," Trump said.
But Trump's energy wishes are likely to run into real limits. First, U.S. oil production under Biden is already at record levels. The federal government cannot force companies to produce more oil, and increased production could drive down prices and reduce profits.
