A spokesman for China's mainland government said Thursday that no one or no force can stop China's reunification and sharply criticized recent separatist remarks by Taiwanese leader Lai Ching-te.
Chen Binhua, spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, was responding to Lai Ching-te's speech in Taipei on October 10, which touched on relations between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait.
Chen said Lai's speech continued to spread the new "two-state" theory and fabricated illusions about "Taiwan independence." According to the spokesman, this shows Lai's adamant insistence on the "Taiwan independence" stance, which is imbued with confrontational views, constantly provoking and increasing tensions and deliberately undermining peace and stability in the region.
Chen also stressed that Taiwan's future lies in national reunification, and said Lai's speech cannot change Taiwan's legal status as part of China or the fact that both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to one China.
