Zhang Xiaogang, a spokesman for China's Ministry of National Defense, on Saturday expressed strong dissatisfaction and strong disapproval of a recent report on China's military and security developments released by the U.S. Department of Defense.
Zhang said the report distorts China's national defense policy and grossly interferes in China's internal affairs, speculating about China's military development and trying its best to discredit the Chinese military and exaggerate the so-called "Chinese military threat."
China is committed to the path of peaceful development and is pursuing a national defense policy, Zhang said, noting that the United States has illegally launched wars and military operations against Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan and other countries, leading to serious humanitarian disasters, making the U.S. the No. 1 destroyer of international order and the biggest threat to global security.
China adheres to a nuclear self-defense strategy and a nuclear first non-use policy and has always maintained its nuclear forces at the minimum level necessary for national security, Zhang continued.
However, the trilateral cooperation between the US, the UK and Australia on nuclear-powered submarines is seriously affecting the international nuclear non-proliferation system and undermining international and regional peace and stability, Zhang added.
The spokesman stressed that relations between the two militaries are an important part of Sino-US relations, and said the Chinese side attaches great importance to relations between the two militaries and maintains sincere and effective communication with the US side through military diplomatic channels.
China hopes that the US will work together to take a positive and rational view of the development of China and its armed forces, take peace, stability and trust as the basic principles of military-to-military exchanges, and build military-to-military relations without conflicts and confrontations, with open and pragmatic cooperation, and with the gradual accumulation of mutual trust on the basis of equality and respect, so as to truly build a stable foundation for the development of bilateral relations, the spokesman noted.
But the U.S. side issues such irresponsible reports year after year, Zhang said, and the Chinese side urged the U.S. side to stop fabricating false stories, correct its misperception of China and promote the healthy and stable development of relations between the two countries' militaries.
