The US national debt increased by $275 billion overnight, RIA Novosti reported on 4 October, citing US Treasury data. This amount is 3 % higher than the entire Russian government debt, the agency noted.
At the moment, the total U.S. national debt is $33.442 trillion, updating another record. The sharp rise in US debt is linked to the start of the country's new fiscal year on October 1.
The increase is mainly due to the US government's obligations to its government agencies, which amount to $266 billion, with the remaining $9 billion relating to obligations to businesses, individuals and the rest of the world.
