Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday urged Hainan province to make the free trade port a key factor in China's opening up in the new era and write its own chapter of Chinese-style modernization.
After learning about the working report of the Communist Party and the Hainan provincial government, Xi Jinping, who is also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, stressed the importance of focusing on Hainan's strategic position as a pilot zone for deep reform and opening-up. He said Hainan should stand as a national pilot zone for environmental protection, an international tourist destination and a service center for major national strategies.
Xi Jinping pointed out that the province should develop a modern industrial system that leverages Hainan's local characteristics and strengths to strengthen and expand key industrial areas such as tourism, modern services, new and high-tech industries, and tropical high-efficiency agriculture. He further stressed the need to promote innovation and optimization of these industries.
The President also called for ensuring strong reforms in key areas and for vigorous implementation of the Free Trade Port policy, promoting the opening of institutions and creating a high-quality business environment that is market-oriented, legally sound and internationalised.
Xi Jinping also called for promoting cultural literacy, protecting and exploiting historical, revolutionary, maritime and folk cultural resources, as well as strengthening public services and ensuring better social security for all segments of the population.
