Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday hailed the significant achievements of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) over the past five "extraordinary" years. He made the statement during a gala dinner hosted by the SAR government to mark the 25th anniversary of Macau's return to Chinese administration.
Xi Jinping stressed that despite global changes the likes of which the world has not seen in a century and a pandemic that has shaken the entire world, the SAR's fifth government has managed to unite the people of Macau and face challenges. It has successfully promoted economic recovery and made progress in all areas of development.
New successes in diversifying the economy
The President highlighted that Macao has made new advances in the past five years in terms of appropriate economic diversification and has significantly improved the living standards of its people. Political and social stability, based on love for the Chinese nation and for Macau, had become a firmer foundation, he said, while the region's international influence and prestige had grown significantly.
Xi attributed these remarkable achievements to the consistent and faithful implementation of the "One Country, Two Systems" policy, the strong support of the central government and mainland China, as well as the active participation of the international community. The President said the hard work and best efforts of all Macau residents under the leadership of the SAR government played a key role.
A vision for the future of Macau
Xi Jinping stressed that Macao should exploit its unique advantages of the "One Country, Two Systems" policy and proactively engage in national development strategies such as building the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Macao should play a more prominent role on the international stage and attract talented individuals to help build an even better future for the region.
At the same time, the President called on Macao to be bolder in its reforms and innovations, taking advantage of the institutional benefits of "One Country, Two Systems" to achieve new successes in its development.
A new chapter under a new government
In his speech, outgoing SAR Executive Director Ho Yat Seng stressed that Macao should contribute to building a stronger China and fulfilling China's great revival. He also expressed his belief that the new Executive Director Sam Hou Fai would lead the government and all Macau people to write a new chapter in the practice of the "One Country, Two Systems" policy with Macau's unique features.
