This was stated by Slovak President Peter Pellegrini after today's roundtable meeting of parliamentary parties on the foreign policy situation. The meeting was attended by the presidents of all three coalition parties - Robert Fico, Matúš Šutaj Eštok and Andrej Danko. From the opposition, only the chairman of the Christian Democratic Movement, Milan Majerský, attended.
"I would like to assure all the citizens of the Slovak Republic that none of the political party chairmen present is preparing or wishes Slovakia to leave the European Union and the North Atlantic Alliance," said the Slovak President. In this context, the head of state added that one of the main reasons for the regular demonstrations by the citizens of the Slovak Republic was therefore irrelevant. "If citizens want to continue to express their disagreement with something in this country, they have every right to do so, but it is useless if they express their disagreement with Slovakia's withdrawal from the European Union and the North Atlantic Alliance." Pellegrini explained.
He also pointed out that the EU and NATO will have to face several challenges and problems in the future. "We live in very turbulent times. Geopolitical changes are taking place, political systems and political regimes are changing in countries to the west of us, where political forces are coming to power that we could not have imagined before could gain such a high level of support. And it's not just the elections in the United States, but other circumstances that we face and have to respond to." said the president.
The Head of State also announced that, despite the absence of two representatives of the opposition today, he plans to convene further neutral round tables in the future at the Presidential Palace on important topics and challenges that the Slovak Republic will have to face within the EU and NATO. "These are things where I see no reason for a political firefight. In the past, it has always been the pride of the Slovak Republic that in foreign policy and energy policy we have had a consensus across the political spectrum," He said. He added that he would continue to do everything possible to reach consensus and have a united position on these vital issues.
The President further informed that he would resume regular meetings of the three highest constitutional officials after the election of a full President of the National Council. "At these meetings, we will be discussing together at regular intervals these important issues, which must be the subject of the highest, but also the highest quality, level of political dialogue that we can have in the country," Pellegrini concluded.
The President supports the idea of holding further round tables on current challenges. "I will do everything I can to find at least some basic consensus on the country's energy security and foreign policy and to speak the same language again," He added.
He appreciated the fact that the leader of the KDH attended the meeting. He considers the refusal of the invitation by PS leader Michal Šimečka and SaS chair Branislav Gröhling to be a sign of their immaturity and unpreparedness to take over the governance of the country. He suspects that they want to continue contradicting and questioning foreign policy orientation.
The PS and SaS rejected the President's invitation. PS leader Michal Šimečka described the format of the meeting as a trap for the opposition. He recalled that three opposition parties had requested the meeting, but the head of state had also invited the coalition parties. SaS refused to be part of the "fake game" of super-partisanship and does not consider Prime Minister Fico a credible partner.
