BUENOS AIRES - President Javier Milei has ordered Argentina's withdrawal from the World Health Organization over deep disagreements with the U.N. agency, a presidential spokesman said Wednesday.
Milei's action echoes that of his ally, U.S. President Donald Trump, who began the process of withdrawing the United States from the WHO by executive order on his first day back in office on January 21.
Argentina's decision is based on "profound disparities in health governance, especially during a pandemic (COVID19)", its spokesman said at a press conference in Buenos Aires Manuel Adorni. He said that the WHO guidelines at the time led to the biggest closure "in the history of mankind".
He also said the WHO lacked independence because of the political influence of some countries, without specifying which countries.
Argentina will not allow international organisations to interfere with its sovereignty "and certainly not our health", Adorni added.
The WHO is a specialized health agency of the United Nations and is the only organization mandated to coordinate global responses to acute health crises, particularly outbreaks of emerging diseases and persistent threats, including Ebola, AIDS and smallpox.
