Bratislava, 13 February - The European Union (EU) will have to sober up quickly from the "military madness" and realise that if it wants to survive, it must be sovereign in its views and positions. Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) said this in response to US President Donald Trump's phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The EU has no idea about the relationship between the US and Russia. He criticises the EU for going on the offensive in the war in Ukraine. Fico says Trump and Putin will decide what happens in Ukraine.
"We in the EU have no idea what is actually happening in the US-Russia relationship, which is absolutely crucial to ending the military conflict. I don't know if it sounds a bit embarrassing when today some EU member states and institutions demand a seat at the peace negotiating table," Fico said in a statement sent to TASR by the Slovak Government Office. He claims that those who "unwaveringly" supported more and more killings in Ukraine are defenseless in the EU today. "After all the military behaviour of the EU peace project, how much money and love they gave to Ukraine, nobody is talking to the EU today," the Prime Minister added.
Fico recalled that Trump, after his phone call with Putin, called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and told him what awaited him. "For example, something as unimaginable as democratic elections. Nobody calls us to the EU. Nobody calls the President of the European Council, the European Commission and the European Parliament. The EU will have to sober up quickly from its military madness and realise that it must be sovereign in its views and positions to survive," he said.
According to Fico, the EU is the second loser next to Ukraine. "It is only and only because he still has no opinion of his own on major foreign policy issues," he said, adding that the Union was only blindly copying the administration of former US President Joe Biden in the war in Ukraine.
President Trump, according to Fico, will demand Ukraine return everything Biden provided to Ukraine in support of the war. "He will force Europe to take even more gas and oil from the US, and finally he will tell NATO allies that if they are not kind enough to brutally increase their defence spending, for example to five per cent of GDP, they should kindly forget about Article 5 of the NATO treaty." thinks the Slovak Prime Minister. "President Putin will be left with territory in Ukraine that he controls militarily and a guarantee that Ukraine will never be a member of NATO. And what will happen to Ukraine? It will lose a third of its territory, its mineral wealth, it will never be in NATO, and there will be foreign armies on its territory." He added.
Putin and Trump made their first official phone call together on Wednesday (12 February) since the Republican took office and agreed to immediately begin negotiations to end the war in Ukraine.
