China has sent the first batch of humanitarian aid to Myanmar, which was hit by a devastating 7.9 magnitude earthquake on 28 March. According to official figures, the disaster left over 2 000 dead, nearly 4 000 injured and hundreds missing.
At the request of the Myanmar government, China has decided to provide emergency aid worth 100 million yuan (The first delivery included tents, blankets, first aid kits and other essential supplies. The China Red Cross has also joined the relief effort.
Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said he was the first to arrive in the affected area rescue team from Yunnan Provincejust 18 hours after the tremors. There are currently approximately 400 Chinese experts, doctors and rescue workerswho have already helped save several people.
President Xi Jinping expressed his condolences to the victims of the disaster and reaffirmed China's readiness to continue to assist in rescue operations, treatment of the wounded and reconstruction of areas affected by the tragedy.
