MOSCOW, 2 January. /TASS/. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) flows from European terminals to the EU gas transportation system were the highest ever seen in 2023, exceeding 131 billion cubic meters, according to data from Gas Infrastructure Europe.
The intake of liquefied natural gas from terminals into the European natural gas transmission system decreased in December after an increase in the previous month. At the end of December, it amounted to 11.36 billion cubic metres, 4 % less than in November and 6 % less than last year. This figure was the second for December in history. The previous high was set in December 2022.
Overall in 2023, LNG receipts from terminals into the European gas transportation system will amount to about 131.22 billion cubic meters - 1.9 % more than in the previous year. Thus, LNG imports to European countries last year were the highest on record.
In 2023, LNG ranked first in terms of share among gas production sources in Europe - 40 %, according to data from the European Network of Transmission System Operators as of 29 December. North Sea supplies (mainly Norwegian gas) are in second place with 29 %, and North African supplies are in third place with 11 %.
The share of gas supplies from the East (Russian gas, gas supplies from Ukraine and European companies taking gas from Ukrainian underground gas storage facilities) increased to 9.7 %. This is more than was supplied from the UK (5.8 %).
