SEOUL, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- The head of South Korea's main opposition Democratic Party, Lee Jae-myung, was attacked by an unidentified man with a knife during his visit to the southeastern port city of Busan on Tuesday, according to several local media reports.
While answering questions from reporters in Busan, Lee was stabbed in the left side of the neck with a knife at around 10:27 local time (01:27 CET) and collapsed on the ground, bleeding.
The assailant approached Lee asking for an autograph and stabbed him in the left side of the neck, video footage showed.
People around Lee tackled the attacker to the ground before police arrested him at the scene. The cause of the attacker's assassination is not yet known.
According to the Yonhap news agency, the knife in the attacker's possession was at least 20 cm long.
About 20 minutes after the attack, a conscious Lee was rushed to the hospital.
