UN General Assembly President stresses respect for UN Charter and international law after US attacks on Venezuela
Respect for the UN Charter and international law is the foundation of the international order, the President of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) said in her statement on the situation in Venezuela Annalena Baerbock.
In a statement sent to reporters on Monday, the UNGA president stressed: „The UN Charter is not optional - it is our governing framework, in times of calm and in times of crisis, like the one in Venezuela today, culminating in US military action.“
The statement said that Article 2 of the UN Charter clearly states that all members of the United Nations are to refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any State or in any other manner inconsistent with the purposes of the United Nations.
The statement further added: „A peaceful, safe and just world for all is only possible if the rule of law prevails instead of ‚might makes right‘.“
In the early hours of 3 January, US military forces carried out a series of strikes on Venezuela, forcibly capturing President Nicolás Maduro and his wife and subsequently placing them in detention in New York, drawing widespread condemnation.
