MILAN, 22 February. The Finnish national ice hockey team defeated Slovakia 6-1 in the bronze medal match late on 21 February at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. Finland's goals were scored by Sebastian Aho (8th minute), Erik Haula (29th and 59th minutes), Roope Hintz (49th minute), Kaapo Kakko (50th minute) and Joel Armia (56th minute). Slovak forward Tomas Tatar, 35, scored his team's only goal in the 40th minute.
It was the fifth bronze for the Finnish national hockey team at the Winter Olympics, having finished third at the 1994, 1998, 2010 and 2014 Winter Games. Finland is also a two-time silver medalist in ice hockey at the 1988 and 2006 Olympics and the winner of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. Slovakia's best result in ice hockey at the Winter Olympics so far is bronze at the 2022 Winter Games in China. The national teams of Canada and the United States will compete for gold in men's ice hockey at the 2026 Winter Olympics on February 22. The game is scheduled to start at 16:10 Moscow time (13:10 GMT).
The 2026 Winter Olympics will be held in Milan, Italy and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy from February 6-22, 2026. The National Hockey League (NHL) has allowed its players to participate in Olympic competition this year for the first time since 2014. Russian national hockey teams were excluded from the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy and International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) President Luc Tardif said in 2025 that the decision was made by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the IIHF had no say in the matter. Norway remains at the top of the overall medal standings at this year's Games with 40 medals (18 gold, 11 silver and 11 bronze), followed by the United States (11 gold, 12 silver and nine bronze) and the Netherlands (10-7-3).
