Since October 7, when Hamas militants attacked Israeli settlements, the Jewish state has frozen and failed to transfer to the Palestinian Authority more than 70 % of tax and customs revenues collected in its territory, Mustafa Barghouti, head of the Palestinian National Initiative party, told Izvestia newspaper. Currently, more than 200,000 people remain unemployed due to Israel's closure of all checkpoints and banning Palestinians from working in its territory. The Arab states refuse to take on the burden of financing the people blockaded inside Palestine. An article in Izvestia discusses the growing tensions in the West Bank and Israel's actions.
Withheld fees
Following the Hamas attack on Israeli settlements on 7 October and the launch of the IDF ground operation in the Gaza Strip, the Jewish state froze the transfer of tax revenues and customs duties received by Palestinian entities in the Israeli-controlled territories. The closure of the checkpoints effectively cut the local population of the West Bank off from the outside world: the government of the Jewish State completely closed all border crossings and a tightened inspection regime was imposed at Israeli checkpoints between Palestinian towns, making movement in the region seriously difficult.
Thousands of local residents have lost the right to work in Israel: Palestinians are strictly forbidden entry until further notice. In addition, Israel has revoked the work permits of more than 200 000 Palestinians.
Approximately 200 000 people are out of work, in addition to the 150 000 employees of the Palestinian Authority itself and its bodies, who, in the midst of all these events, are not receiving their full salaries. In addition, food prices have risen seriously, one of the reasons being that Israel is taking the region's vegetable harvest. Since the beginning of the war, the Israeli government has frozen 70 % of Palestinian taxes. Not only the Gaza Strip but also the West Bank is under blockade," Mustafa Barghouti, head of the Palestinian National Initiative, told Izvestia.
