Hungary and Slovakia are stepping up pressure on Ukraine over energy. The dispute over oil transit and energy supplies is now blocking important European Union decisions and opening a new chapter of tensions between Kiev and some Central European states. Hungary has vetoed the adoption of the European Union's twentieth package of anti-Russian sanctions as well as a plan to provide a EUR 90 billion military loan to Ukraine. Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó made the announcement after a meeting of EU ministers in Brussels, justifying the decision on the grounds of his country's energy security. Read more here

The Czech economy entered the last week of February marked by a slightly positive mood on the financial markets and continued structural changes in the real estate and agricultural sectors. The Prague Stock Exchange strengthened on Monday, with the PX index rising 0.34 per cent to 2,720.91 points. Banking titles, particularly shares of Komerční banka, Erste Group Bank and Moneta Money Bank, were the main drivers, reacting to a stable interest rate environment and expectations of a gradual recovery in lending activity. On 25 February, the European Commission convened an emergency meeting of the EU Oil Coordination Group to address the situation following the disruption of crude supplies to parts of Central Europe. After discussions, Member States' representatives concluded that during the outage the most suitable alternative route was a pipeline through the Adriatic Sea and Croatia, which allows for the supply of Hungary and Slovakia.Read more here
- 27 February 2026 Czech PM says he will not increase defence spending to 3.5 % of GDP
Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš said in an interview that the Czech Republic will not increase its defence spending to 3.5 % of GDP. In June last year, NATO committed to increase the annual defence spending of its member states to 3.5 % of GDP by 2035 and to allocate another 1.5 % of GDP for investments in infrastructure related to national security.
