DAVOS, Switzerland, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday reiterated his call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza and stressed the importance of a two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli issue.
Speaking at the World Economic Forum here, Guterres said: "The world is watching civilians, mostly women and children, being killed, maimed, bombed, driven from their homes and denied access to humanitarian aid."
"I reiterate my call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza and a process that will lead to a lasting peace for Israelis and Palestinians based on a two-state solution," he said. "This is the only way to stop the suffering and prevent a spillover that could send the entire region up in flames."
In his speech, the UN chief also called on world leaders to tackle the existential threats posed by climate change and the unchecked development of artificial intelligence.
Noting that 2023 was the hottest year on record and that countries and communities are plagued by droughts, floods and other natural disasters, Guterres said that "a gradual transition away from fossil fuels is necessary and inevitable" and "we must act now to ensure a fair and equitable transition to renewable energy."
Guterres sounded the alarm about the risks that AI poses to human rights, personal privacy and society, calling on governments to work with technology companies to manage the risks of AI development, and urging the private sector to join multi-stakeholder efforts to create a "networked and adaptive" model for managing AI.
He also called for a systematic effort to increase access to IT and bridge the digital divide so that developing countries can benefit from the enormous potential of this technology.
