US President Joe Biden sees a solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in supporting Palestinian independence, which is contrary to the position of Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu. This was stated by John Kirby, Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the White House National Security Council, at a briefing on 18 January.
"We believe that the Palestinians have every right to live in an independent state in peace and security. President [US Biden] and his team will continue to work to achieve this goal," he stressed.
Kirby added that Biden believes that coexistence between Israel and an independent Palestine is in the interest of the entire Middle East region.
Netanyahu said on January 17 that the armed escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict could continue until 2025.
On that day, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken also noted that a secure future in the Middle East depends on a solution to the conflict between Palestine and Israel.
Earlier, on 30 December, Netanyahu had said that the Israeli Defence Forces' (IDF) military action against the Palestinian radical Hamas movement in the Gaza Strip could last for several more months. He indicated that they would continue until Israel had accomplished all its goals.
Earlier, on 18 November, Biden declared that the Palestinian people have every right to have their own state outside of ties to Hamas.
The situation in the Middle East escalated on the morning of 7 October when Hamas subjected Israeli territory to a massive rocket attack from the Gaza Strip and also attacked border areas in the south of the country and took hostages. On the same day, Israel launched retaliatory strikes against targets in the Gaza Strip.
The Palestinians are seeking to return the borders between the two countries to their status before the 1967 Six-Day War. Palestine wants to establish its state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip and make East Jerusalem its capital. Israel refuses to accept its terms.
