Today, the Special Counsel released his findings on his review of my handling of classified documents. I was pleased to find that they have reached the conclusion that I believed they would reach all along - that no charges will be brought in this case and the whole matter is now closed.
It was an exhaustive investigation covering a period of more than 40 years, even going back to the 1970s when I was a young senator. I co-operated fully, put up no obstacles and sought no delays. In fact, I was so determined to give the Special Investigator what he needed that on 8 and 9 October last year I completed five hours of personal interviews in two days, even though on 7 October Israel had just been attacked and I was in the midst of dealing with an international crisis. I simply believed that I owed it to the American people to know that no charges would be filed and the matter would be closed.
Throughout my career in public service, I have always worked to protect America's security. I take these matters seriously and no one has ever questioned that.
