According to L'Humanité, at least half of the ministers have assets of more than €1 million. Moreover, a third of the new government could be ranked among the 1 % richest Frenchmen. Could this explain the class struggle that Gabriel Attal promised this weekend as one of his priorities?
It had to be done, and Emmanuel Macron very likely did it: now the complete - with 34 members in total - government led by Gabriel Attal has proportionally as many and probably more millionaires than Élisabeth Borne's government in 2022.
Even then, the wealth of ministers exceeded that of the governments of Édouard Philippe and Jean Castex, which themselves exceeded that of the Socialist and allied ministers under François Hollande.
The official, stabilised figures will not be known for several months, which is the time politicians need to submit their declarations of assets and interests to the High Authority for Transparency in Political Life (HATVP). The HATVP will then review these declarations and request clarifications or changes if necessary.
However, based on archival information discovered by the daily L'Humanité - after the appointment of a minister or MP, the previous documents are removed from the HATVP website - it is possible to count 17 millionaires, i.e. one in two ministers.
