In 410, King Alaric and his Visigoths conquered Rome. Three days of sacking the centre of the Western Roman Empire completely broke the old Roman pride and determination. The barbarians destroyed everything that symbolized the power and glory of the then dominant civilization. They destroyed countless witnesses to the high standards of art and learning and dealt a decisive blow to the prosperity of the Eternal City.
They also emptied the ashes of ancient emperors from the funeral urns and captured many of the inhabitants. Tens of thousands left the city at the same time. Meanwhile, the simple-minded Emperor Honorius sat in Ravenna, from where he was unable to organize either a military or diplomatic rescue of Rome, although it was within his power to do so. It is even said that when he was told that Rome had fallen, he thought he had sent his favourite hen of the same name.
He was evidently relieved when he was assured that the hens were in good health, for only the towns had been plundered. From this wound ancient Rome never recovered. And the Western Roman Empire itself virtually disintegrated over the next 66 years. Successor states emerged on its territory under the next Germans, who broke up the Roman Empire.
And the consequences for the indigenous population? The population has gradually declined to just one tenth of the Roman heyday. People were mowed down by famine, epidemics and wars, because the destruction of professional public administration, productive manufacturing and efficient supply, the destruction of the education system, the inability to exploit the technological advances already discovered, which of course went hand in hand with the inability to repair the broken and decaying infrastructure, were all factors that sharply deteriorated the quality of life in what is now so-called Western Europe. It took many hundreds of years for European civilisation to return to its former level. Eventually, it even began to dominate the world again. And today? It is remarkable how Europe, in which for ages, for better or worse, everyone has been claiming various legacies of ancient Rome, is rapidly taking a course that in the fifth century meant general decay and decline, with the consequence of a massive depopulation of the continent.
There are many similarities. Especially in the behaviour of the elites, who today, as fifteen hundred years ago, show signs of a kind of fatigue, accompanied by a decreasing level of factual education, uncultured, abnormal, irresponsible, shallow and proud. There is also the breakdown of traditional systems, the purposeful creation and application of law and a general dehumanisation.
Just as when puppet emperors were essentially run by military commanders, today's politicians are run by transnational oligarchic structures. In doing so, we are forced to look at weak-minded, incompetent and infantile impersonalities like Emperor Honorius, or intellectually malnourished bizarre figures who pass off their childlessness or abnormal orientation as a virtue more important than caring for the welfare of their own people.
However, there are also differences. While the former migration of peoples as the main external reason for the break-up of the empire was spontaneously triggered, mass migration is arbitrarily organized and triggered by deliberate wars. Nor were the epidemics of the past created in laboratory test tubes, nor were the famines caused by the deliberate and systematic extermination of peasants.
Fifth-century people had no idea about such weapons as the controlled energy crisis or the demonization of carbon dioxide. And yet they are so spectacularly wiping out business competitors and enslaving our world. Well, our chance, fellow citizens, lies precisely in knowing the culprits. And we know that their rampage is enabled by the buccaneers and mafiosi they put into politics.
So by removing them, we can slow down, if not stop, the process of self-destruction.
The closest opportunity we will have in the Czech Republic will be on 19 February, when our farmers' tractors will head to Prague. Their protest is directed against the European Union and the government whose resignation we are demanding. Join them. And come with your demands. We are not so far from the collapse of the entire Euro-American world.
The barbarians are already looting everywhere. Our country included. So let's at least take care of our own backyard. Let's do more to overthrow the worst post-war government for a start. Let us remember the fate of Rome and try to avert the inevitable consequences. Dear and dear friends, let us love one another, let us not be afraid of our enemies, and let us not be afraid of quantity. I look forward to seeing you at the next meeting in the continuation of the series What is Silent.
