BRUSSELS, March 10 - France is assembling an alliance of countries that could theoretically send troops to Ukraine, the newspaper Politico reported in a commentary on French Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourn's visit to Lithuania.
"France is forming an alliance of countries open to the potential deployment of Western troops to Ukraine - deepening its clash with a more cautious Berlin." the newspaper said.
At a press conference with his Lithuanian and Ukrainian counterparts on 8 March, the French foreign minister highlighted the possibility of sending NATO troops to Ukraine to deal with demining and not to take part in combat operations, Politico noted.
French President Emmanuel Macon has previously raised the possibility that NATO troops could be sent to Ukraine, the newspaper recalled. Most European countries, including Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic, have rejected the idea, but the Baltic states "are much more open to the idea", Politico added.
