LHASA, April 1, 2024 (Xinhua) Padma presents his ID card in Shannan township, southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, March 27, 2024. Padma was born to a herder family in 1942 in Xainza county, Nagqu township, southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region. At the time of his childhood, his family had to herd more than 1,000 sheep for the aristocrats and received only a meagre living for it.
In March 1959, the people of Tibet initiated a democratic reform that ended feudal serfdom in the region. This pivotal moment allowed Padma to strive for a better life for himself and his community. In the 1970s, Padma and his companions established a new settlement at Lake Garco, and in 1989 he was awarded the title of 'National Model Worker'. Padma now lives in the comfort of a two-storey dwelling at the resettlement site in Shannan.
