President Biden met with Guatemalan President Arévalo to congratulate him on his inauguration in January and to reiterate our commitment to a strong partnership between the United States and Guatemala. The two leaders, whose meeting followed President Arévalo's meeting with Vice President Harris, discussed good governance, effective migration management, the importance of promoting democracy, and other issues of mutual concern.
President Biden thanked President Arévalo for his leadership in organizing the next Los Angeles Declaration Summit on Protection and Migration, scheduled for this spring, and stressed the importance of continuing to advance the Biden and Harris administrations' strategy for addressing the root causes of migration in Central America.
