TEL AVIV, April 10 /TASS/. Israeli military officials expect a response from Tehran to the attack on the Iranian consulate in Syria after April 12, the Times of Israel online newspaper reported. The Israeli side is preparing for the possibility that the attack will come from one of a number of proxies or from Iran itself, as well as the possibility of a multi-pronged attack, the paper said.
Israel estimates that the Iranian response will come after the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr, which is forecast to end on 12 April. The army also believes that the attack will target military or strategic sites, and not civilian targets. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said earlier that the ministry had completed preparations to respond to any possible scenario that could develop in relation to Iran.
On 1 April, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that seven Iranian military advisers were killed in an Israeli airstrike on the Tehran consulate in Damascus. Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Tehran would make Israel repent for the strike, while President Ebrahim Raisi vowed that the attack would not go unanswered. Israel has not yet claimed responsibility for the airstrike. However, Israel Defense Forces spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari told CNN that the Israeli military said the target of the strike was not the Iranian consulate but an IRGC military facility, which it said was merely disguised as a civilian building.
