KABUL, April 21 (Xinhua) -- An estimated 15.8 million people in war-torn Afghanistan will experience extremely critical emergency levels of food shortages by 2024, according to a United Nations (UN) report released Thursday.
According to the UN's annual report on Afghanistan's performance in 2023, the majority of Afghanistan's population is unable to provide for basic needs such as healthcare, food, livelihoods and housing.
"In early 2023, families across Afghanistan continued to struggle to feed their children. Nine out of ten people did not consume enough food, the cost of which absorbed an overwhelming 89 % of household income," the report said.
According to the Global Hunger Index for 2023, Afghanistan is ranked 114th out of 125 countries with sufficient data to calculate an index score.
War-torn Afghanistan, with a population of around 40 million, has been struggling with poverty and economic hardship since the withdrawal of US-led forces in August 2021.
