Today, my administration will forgive student debt for 160,000 more people, bringing the total number of Americans who have benefited from our debt relief measures to 4.75 million. Each of these borrowers received an average of more than $35,000 in debt relief. These additional 160,000 borrowers are people who are enrolled in my administration's SAVE plan, public service workers such as teachers, nurses, or law enforcement officers, or borrowers who have been approved for debt relief because of the corrections we have made in income-driven repayment.
Today's announcement builds on the significant progress we have made for students and borrowers over the past three years. These include the largest increase in the Pell Grant cap in a decade, fixing public service loan forgiveness so that teachers, nurses, police officers, and other public service workers get the relief they are entitled to under the law, and holding colleges accountable for abusing students and families. And last month, I unveiled my administration's new plans that, combined with everything we've done so far, would eliminate student debt for more than 30 million Americans.
From day one of my administration, I promised to fight to make higher education a ticket to the middle class, not a barrier to opportunity. I will never stop working to eliminate student debt - no matter how many times Republican elected officials try to stop us.
