On Saturday, 25 May 2024, Prime Minister Petr Fiala, together with Transport Minister Martin Kupka, Brno Mayor Markéta Vaňková and ŘSD Director General Radek Mátl, visited the open day of the construction of the Brno Grand Urban Ring Road - section Žabovřeská I. The completion of the entire construction will enable faster connection of the city districts and easier connection to motorways towards Prague, Vienna, Bratislava, Ostrava and Svitavy.
The construction of the Great Urban Ring Road on Žabovřeská started in autumn 2018. The project will eliminate the narrowing between two already built sections in the future. The construction of this section will cost CZK 2 billion.
A tram line runs along the existing two-lane road. The narrow corridor between the river and the rock massif does not allow a four-lane road of a large urban ring road to run side by side with the tramway. The construction will remove the bottleneck and thus calm traffic in the entire north-western part of the city up to the exit from the Husovice tunnel. These less than two kilometres of road are an extremely important part of Brno's traffic. The Žabovřeská I section should be open in autumn 2024.
"This is a building that I know well and have followed from the beginning. As a resident of Brno, I often go there and I look forward to the completion of the construction together with all Brno citizens. The entire Great Urban Ring Road is important not only for Brno, but for the whole of South Moravia and for the transit of traffic in the Czech Republic," the Prime Minister said on the spot.
The first stage focused on the section between the Kníničský and Kamenomlýnský bridges. Here, for example, a service road and a footbridge over the busy road were built to solve the dangerous crossing between Žabovřesské louky and the Bráfova bus stop. In the second stage, the work moved to the section between Kamenomlýnský most and Hlinky. In this part of the construction, it was crucial to break through the tunnel into which the tram line will be moved to make room for the necessary road widening. Over 11 tonnes of explosives were used to blast the rock. Climbers and divers worked together at the site.
The entire construction of the nearly 22 kilometres of the Brno Grand Urban Ring Road is organised by the Road and Motorway Directorate and the City of Brno is also participating in it. It is a long-term investment priority of the state. At the moment, 7.6 km are already operational, 3 km are under construction and 11 km are in preparation.
On Saturday, 25 May 2024, the Road and Motorway Directorate organised an open day at the Žabovřeská Grand Urban Ring Road for the general public. Those interested could walk the entire approximately 1 km long section of the construction, which is just about to be put into operation.
