EU /GERMANY/Germany is blocking progress in negotiations on a new European Union (EU) sanctions package against the Russian Federation, the DPA news agency reported on 13 June, citing diplomatic sources.
"The federal government is blocking progress in negotiations on the next EU sanctions package against Russia. Germany's considerations and demands for changes are a crucial reason why the sanctions plans have so far failed to be finalised," RIA Novosti news agency quoted the report as saying.
According to the agency, the sanctions are intended to combat circumvention of existing restrictions. For the first time, there are also plans to introduce tough measures against Russian business related to liquefied natural gas.
Germany is concerned about measures that should make it more difficult to circumvent sanctions. Germany is likely to fear that German companies could be held liable, the material states.
