The agenda of the 25th meeting of the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic was devoted to the approval of proposals to award or confer state honours. The main item was the approval of the appointment of judges of the Constitutional Court at the request of the President of the Republic, Petr Pavel. This motion and other items of the meeting passed thanks to the votes of the senators from TOP 09.
The Senate proposal envisages nominating a total of 12 individuals for the Order of the White Lion, the highest state decoration of the Czech Republic. Among them, for example, the Czech painter Alfons Maria Mucha or Colonel in memoriam Adolf Opalka, one of the group of paratroopers who participated in the preparation and execution of the assassination of the acting Reich Protector Reinhard Heydrich.
"Mucha's Art Nouveau painting The Fruit and the composition of the Slavonic Epic, a unique confession of the Slavic peoples, belong to the heritage of the Czech nation. Let us not forget that he was not only a Czech painter, but a renowned graphic artist of world importance,"
judges the senator from Znojmo Thomas One thirdwho, on the day after the 82nd anniversary of the deaths of paratroopers Gabčík and Kubiš, could not help but remember Adolf Opalka.
"He is one of the heroes who refused to submit to Nazi oppression and was in the front line of the fight for the freedom and independence of the Czech nation until the last moments of his life. I will be glad if in the future his name is not only borne by one of the streets in Moravský Krumlov, but also by the highest state honours."
The senators also discussed Petr Pavel's request to appoint judges to the Constitutional Court. Two vacancies will be filled by Professor Jiří Přibáň and Doctor of Science Tomáš Langášek.
"We are talking here about respected authorities with extensive experience in case law. Jiří Přibáň is not only a capable academic and a valuable theorist, but also a public intellectual who is committed to defending the rule of law and Czech democracy. As for Tomáš Langášek, he is an undeniable expert in the field of the Constitutional Court's case law, having been on its premises since 2003 as an assistant to its then President Pavel Rychetský. Their professional erudition assumes that the protection of constitutionality will be in good hands," commented on their nomination by the Senator of the Rychnov nad Kněžnou Jan Grulich.
