General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China Xi Jinping met with Ma Ying-jeou and his delegation in Beijing on the afternoon of April 10.
Xi Jinping said compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to the Chinese nation. The Chinese nation is a great nation in the world, it has created a long-lasting, beautiful and unique Chinese civilization, of which every Chinese son and daughter is proud. The long history of the Chinese nation, which spans more than five thousand years, records that our ancestors moved to Taiwan and multiplied for generations, and that our compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait together resisted foreign aggression and reclaimed Taiwan. Along the way, the Chinese nation has written the indivisible history of the two sides of the Taiwan Strait and engraved the historical fact that compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are united by blood.
All our compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are Chinese. There is no grudge that cannot be resolved, no issue that cannot be discussed, and no force that can separate us. The distance across the Taiwan Strait cannot block the close ties between compatriots on both sides. Differences in systems cannot change the objective fact that both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to the same country and nation. Outside interference cannot stop the historical trend of family and country reunification. The compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait have always followed the same path in the same spirit, connected by heart and helping each other.
Youth is the hope of the country and the future of the nation. Only if the young people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are good will the future of both sides of the Strait be good. Young people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait should strengthen their ambition, strength and self-confidence to be Chinese, jointly create lasting prosperity for the Chinese nation and continue to write new glories in the history of the Chinese nation.
Xi Jinping stressed that compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait share common blood, common culture and common history, and more importantly, we share a common responsibility for the nation and common expectations for the future. We must understand the overall situation of cross-Strait relations from the perspective of the overall interests and long-term development of the Chinese nation.
