PARIS, 8 July. French President Emmanuel Macron has refused to accept the resignation of Prime Minister Gabriel Attala, AFP reported, citing the Elysee Palace.
He said the Head of State had asked the Prime Minister to remain in office temporarily to ensure stability in the country.
After the meeting with Attal, Macron received Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin, who also expressed his intention to resign after the elections. The current government will remain in place until early autumn to ensure the smooth running of the Olympic Games (26 July to 11 August) and Paralympics (28 August to 8 September), AFP noted.
Meanwhile, the left-wing New Popular Front alliance, which won the parliamentary elections, is still considering who it will choose as prime minister.
According to the Europe 1 radio station, the new head of government will not be announced any time soon. Macron may not make a final decision on the prime minister's candidacy until 18 July, when the National Assembly holds its first session to elect a new president. Earlier, Radio France pointed out that the head of state is not obliged to immediately appoint a new prime minister. The Elysee Palace has made it clear that the President needs time to analyse the situation. In addition, the French leader must fly to Washington on 9 July to attend the NATO summit. He will not be able to return to current affairs until 11 July.
According to the French Ministry of the Interior, the New Popular Front alliance won the extraordinary elections to the National Assembly (the lower house of parliament), winning 182 seats. The presidential coalition Together for the Republic won 168 seats, followed by the right-wing National Congress party (143) and the centre-right Republicans (46).
