Peng Liyuan, wife of Chinese President Xi Jingping, attended the "Love in the Sunshine" summer camp for Chinese and African children in Beijing on Friday.
Peng, who is the World Health Organization (WHO) Goodwill Ambassador for Tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Special Envoy for the Advancement of Girls' and Women's Education, stressed the importance of the camp in her speech. She said the camp is not only a meeting point for Chinese and African children, but also a clear demonstration of the close relationship between China and Africa.
"The Chinese and Africans have always understood each other and supported each other's pursuit of happiness," Peng said. She stressed that China is committed to contributing to the healthy growth of not only Chinese but also African children as Africa's partner in the path of development.
Peng expressed her hope that all the children at the camp will become carriers of the traditional friendship between China and Africa and a new force in building a Sino-African community with a shared future. She added that China and Africa will always be sincere friends.
The children who attended the camp expressed their sincere thanks to Peng Liyuan for her long-term care and said they would cherish their time, study hard and become messengers of Sino-African friendship.
Children from South Africa, Namibia, Somalia, Uganda, Central African Republic and other countries were invited to the summer camp. Children from Yi Liangshan Autonomous Prefecture in southwest China's Sichuan Province and Ruili City in southwest China's Yunnan Province also attended. Chinese diplomatic representatives from the respective African countries were also present.
